Summary

Chaves, J. A. G. (2006), Pilgrimage and memory: a revisitation of Pedro da Silveira’s poetry. Boletim do Núcleo Cultural da Horta, 15: 59-75.

Within the thematic variety of Pedro da Silveira’s poetic work, a picture of the island stands out revealing it as a space loaded with signs, as well as with memories of ancestors, portraits of the stillness of lives filled with wonderings about the future. References to the sameness of daily life mirror the passage of time in the island and explain why its inhabitants constantly dream of other places and other wharves. Longing in Silveira’s poems is a universal feeling that encompasses both a thirst for survival and a strong attachment to the island, common to all those who leave it and spread themselves throughout the world, although forever moored to their blood ties and to the images of their native soil.
