From 1944 to 1955, Manuel Lopes lived in Faial island (Azores), where he worked at the Western Telegraph. He was one of the founders of Claridade (1936), the cultural magazine that became the turning point for the modern literature of Cape Verde. During the time he lived in Faial, he wrote an important part of his narrative fiction, he published the book Poemas de quem ficou , he devoted himself to painting and he gave his contribution, in several different ways, to the renewal of the Azorean culture and literature. He sent three letters to the Azorean writer Fernando de Lima that are published and attached to this article.
