DOCUMENTS ON SÃO TOMÉ MAMBA (DENDRASPIS)
Segundo me affirmou Freire Sobral, a cobra verde venenosa, foi encontrada no Uba-budo, que em dialecto creoulo significa "muro de pedra", e enviada por esse cavalheiro ao Snr. Moller. (Freire Sobral told me that the poisonous green snake was found in the Uba-budo, wich means, in the creole dialect, "stone wall", and sent to Mr. Moller by this gentleman). Ignoro a epocha, mas tenho bem de memoria que elle me disse, ter sido apanhada n’essa localidade. (I don't know when, but I remember very well that he said to me that it had been caught in this locality). Todavia sou de parecer que se deve ter uma certa reserva com o habitat da especie, porque póde ser que Freire Sobral, pela simples descripção que eu lhe dei da especie, a confundisse com a vulgaríssima Soá-Soá. (Nevertheless, in my opinion, we should be careful with the species habitat, because Freire Sobral, by the simple description I gave to him, could have counfound it with the very common Soá-Soá (Philothamnus thomensis). Moller, sedento de gloria, e Bedriaga, prompto sempre a ser colporteur inconscient, poderiam levantar nova polemica acerca do habitat da especie em questão. (Moller, thirsty of glory, and Bedriaga, always disposed to be an incounscious mailman, could stimulate another controversy about the species habitat.) E de resto, dando-se o habitat de Uba-budo á especie, iria Moller ficar melindrado, porque é localidade que nunca vizitou, e elle não desejaria decerto perder a prioridade da descoberta de mais esta especie. (Finally, if we give to the species the habitat Uba-budo, Moller would be angry, because he never visited such locality, and surelly he would not loose the priority of the discovery of another species.) Freire Sobral, abastado e benemerito agricultor em S.Thomé, tinha duas ou trez filhas nas Ursulinas, em Coimbra, e Moller estava encarregado de olhar pelas crianças, vizitando-as amiudadas vezes. (Freire Sobral, rich and benefactor farmer in S. Tomé, had two or three daughters at the Ursulinas, in Coimbra, and Moller was in charge to take care of the children, so he visited them many times.) Pedindo para S.Thomé bichos, é natural que o Sobral o desejasse obsequiar, e porisso, por varias vezes, lhe obteve bom material, tanto em reptis, como em outros animaes - (Asking for animals from S. Talvez o Dr. Lopes Vieira podesse saber ao certo o ponto em que foi encontrada. (Maybe Dr. Lopes Vieira could know the precise place where it has been found.) Lembro a VªExª o Dr. Lopes Vieira, porque me lembro ainda das duas malfadadas rãs, e não desejava que pela simples questão d’uma localidade, se levantasse alguma discussão que fizesse gemer os prélos. (I refer Dr. Lopes Vieira to you because I still remember the two damned frogs (1) and I wouldn't that another conflict make groan the printing press because of the insignificant matter of one locality).

Conheciam muito bem os trabalhos uns dos outros e a correspondência particular também, as we can see by the letter from Paulino & Moller. Usually we call that "conspiração" .
